James Vaughan and Elliott Ward miss Norwich City start

Norwich City will be forced to start their Premier League campaign without injured striker James Vaughan and defender Elliott Ward.

Vaughan, 23, and Ward, 26, suffered knee injuries during City's pre-season training camp in Germany last week.

Boss Paul Lambert told the club website: "They're going to miss the start of the season, so that's a bit of a blow for us."

"They won't be out for a few months or anything like that."

Ward played 41 times in his debut campaign for the Canaries last season, helping the Norfolk outfit to automatic promotion from the Championship.

Lambert has central-defensive options in Zak Whitbread, who finished last season as first choice alongside Ward, Leon Barnett and loan signing Ritchie de Laet.

Last season's top scorer Grant Holt, Simeon Jackson, Steve Morison and Chris Martin are among those who can cover Vaughan's absence.

Meanwhile right-back Kyle Naughton, on loan from Tottenham, made his first Norwich appearance on Thursday, playing almost an hour in the goalless friendly against Southend.
