Boss Brendan Rodgers insists Swansea City are 'competitive'

Manager Brendan Rodgers believes Swansea City have shown they can compete in the Premier League despite not yet scoring in the top-flight.

The Swans 0-0 home draw to Sunderland was their second successive goalless draw following a stalemate with Wigan.

And although Swansea are yet to win this season, boss Rodgers has said his side are competitive.

"You've seen in the opening three games we can more than hold our own in the league," he said.

"I just felt that if we had a little bit of good fortune we would have taken all three points.

"[It was] another game that reinforces that we're here to compete in the league.

"You need resilience also in this league and hopefully the performances, which have been very good, will get the results and the wins to match that later on."

Rodgers' side had chances to secure three points against Sunderland on Saturday with Scott Sinclair, last season's top-scorer, and record signing Danny Graham going close.

And although frustrated with the lack of goals, Rodgers was pleased with his side's display against the Black Cats.

"I felt our performance level was very, very good. We've done everything bar score, but what was important was that we kept another clean sheet," he said.

"It's another clean sheet which, if you can't win a game at this level, you need to try and ensure you don't lose it.

"Even though I'm confident and believe the goals will come, because our creativity is good, then what's important is the other end of the field that you can be defensively strong as a team and I think we've shown that in two of the three games."

Swansea's next game in the Premier League will be the visit to Arsenal on 10 September.

And Rodgers says he will use the international break to take stock of his side's opening three games in the Premier League.

"It gives us a nice chance to reflect on the opening weeks," added Rodgers.

"Obviously one or two of the players go away and will gain valuable experience at international level.

"Then we'll come back in a couple of weeks time to get ready for another fantastic day and occasion for our club."
