Dickov 'desperate' for Oldham Athletic to reach JP Trophy final

Oldham's last Wembley appearance saw them lose to Manchester United

Oldham manager Paul Dickov is desperate for his side to play at Wembley in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final.

The Latics face Chesterfield in the Northern Area final of the competition, looking for their first trip to Wembley since the 1994 FA Cup semi-final.

"We desperately want to try and win both [matches]," the Latics boss told BBC Radio Manchester.

"We can't go to Chesterfield and try to get a draw as we're not at our best when we try to do that."

Dickov added: "The feel-good factor and the relationship between the players and the fans is back and I think that's important as they players really do strive off it.

"It gives them a buzz, it gives them a determination when they turn around and see the amount of travelling support we've.

"They desperately want to win these games and give these supporters a trip to Wembley."

Oldham have had a mixed season in the league currently sit 16th in League One, but the Spireites are bottom of the table, seven points from safety.

The sides have already met twice this season, with the Latics winning 5-2 at Boundary Park in November and they played out a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture.

Despite going into the game as favourites Dickov still expects a tight game against John Sheridan's side.

"We're going to have two tough games. You only have to look back a couple of weeks ago and we went there and had a draw," he added.

"John's got them playing good attacking football, with good attacking players.

"It's two one-off games if you like and it's a semi-final so they're going to be up for it, the fans are going to be up for it, we're going to be up for it so I think it will two really good footballing games.

"It's two fantastic game for everybody involved with both club's as we both know what's at the end of it."
