Substitute Ryan Lowe scored the winning penalty as 10-man MK Dons stumbled into the League Cup second round with a shoot-out success at Cheltenham Town.

The visitors scored all five of their spot-kicks and goalkeeper David Martin kept out Darryl Duffy's shot.

Dons had Stephen Gleeson sent off after 40 minutes for a foul on Sam Deering but led when Dean Bowditch fired in.

Kaid Mohamed's crashed home a 30-yard equaliser and both sides had chances before the penalty drama.

Robinson upset over Gleeson dismissal

"For 20 minutes we started very, very slow.

"It was very sticky out there and we couldn't move the ball as fluently as we'd like.

"To then lose Shaun Williams and Stephen Gleeson was difficult.

"But you bring on Alan Smith, you bring on Ryan Lowe and you bring on Antony Kay - there's a difference this year, they're men and they were superb."
