York City boss Gary Mills targets successive promotions

York City boss Gary Mills has set his side the target of achieving a second successive promotion.

The Minstermen returned to the Football League in May after they ended their eight-year hiatus with a 2-1 win over Luton in the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off final.

"My aim last year was promotion and it is the same this season," he told BBC Radio York.

"People talk about consolidating but to me that's a negative approach."

He added: "It's simple, I want to get promoted. We've worked hard in pre-season and we have the momentum from last season still.

"We've kept the nucleus of the squad from last year and the new signings have gelled in fantastically well."

In both of the last two seasons one of the teams promoted from the Conference has achieved a successive promotion to League One.

Stevenage managed it with a 1-0 victory over Torquay in the play-off final in 2011, while Crawley clinched automatic promotion on the final day of last season.

Having also guided the Minstermen to the FA Trophy in his first full season in charge at Bootham Crescent, Mills is keen to see a large crowd turn out for their first game back in the Football League against Wycombe on Saturday.

"It will be an incredible occasion for everyone in the city," he continued.

"I think some people wondered if this day would ever come, well now it's here. I'd love to see a full house because I think everybody deserves it."
