Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe signs new three-year deal

Jermain Defoe has signed a new three-year contract with Tottenham to end speculation about his future.

The striker, who rejoined Spurs from Portsmouth for £15m in January 2009, had been linked with possible moves.

The 29-year-old, who has been included in Roy Hodgson's squad for England's upcoming World Cup qualifiers, had 18 months remaining on his old deal.

Spurs tweeted: "We are delighted to announce Jermain Defoe has signed a new contract with the club until 2015."

Defoe also gave his reaction on Twitter: "Fantastic week - signed my new contract at Spurs and I'm meeting up with England on Monday for two important games."

The striker has started both of Tottenham's Premier League games this season and manager Andre Villas-Boas said he had a future at the north London club.

The England international made his 300th first-team appearance for Spurs in their 1-1 draw with West Brom on Saturday.

Defoe is one of only three first-team forwards at Tottenham, alongside £5m signing Emmanuel Adebayor and 19-year-old Harry Kane.
