Walsall: Chesterfield's Craig Westcarr signs on loan

Walsall have signed transfer-listed Chesterfield striker Craig Westcarr on loan until 5 January.

The Saddlers are looking to boost their firepower after a barren run of just five goals in six League One games.

Subject to clearance, the 27 year-old former England Under-21 International will make his debut on Saturday against bottom club Hartlepool United.

"Craig is a player that we have been aware of for some time," said Saddlers boss Dean Smith.

"He's quick, can carry the ball and link up the play and also score goals. He's also got that bit of experience which we need.

"We had no hesitation in bringing him in when the opportunity presented itself to us.

"He played in League One last season and caused us problems, so we know that he can be a handful."

Westcarr was Nottingham Forest's youngest-ever player when he made his debut at the age of 16.

After joining Cambridge United in 2005, he then helped them win promotion to the Blue Square Premier with Kettering Town, who he rejoined after a brief spell at Stevenage.

He then moved to Notts County and helped them to promotion in 2010 before joining Chesterfield for an undisclosed fee in August 2011, scoring at Wembley to help the Spireites lift the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Walsall go into Saturday's game on the back of a 14-match winless run that has seen them slip from sixth to 17th in League One, as well as bowing out of both the FA Cup and the JP Trophy.
