Plymouth Argyle appoint John Sheridan as new manager

John Sheridan has been confirmed as the new manager of League Two strugglers Plymouth Argyle.

Sheridan, 48, has been out of management since losing his job as Chesterfield manager in August 2012.

The former Republic of Ireland midfielder began his managerial career at Oldham in 2001 as co-caretaker after a successful playing career.

He takes over from Carl Fletcher, who was sacked as Argyle boss on New Year's Day after 15 months in charge.

"I am very privileged to get this opportunity to manage the club," said Sheridan.

"Everyone I've talked to says what a good club it is and what potential there is.

"I am very confident I can get us out of the position we are in if everyone - the players and fans - work together.

"I remember the support from the fans when I played down here with Leeds and Oldham, and that was one of the things that attracted me.

"From my time at Oldham and Chesterfield, I think I know what's required from the players and what we need to do to succeed."

Plymouth are currently in the relegation zone of League Two following Saturday's 4-0 defeat against Port Vale.

They are 23rd in the division, one point from safety, with AFC Wimbledon and Aldershot both above them on 25 points.
