Sven-Goran Eriksson denies joining 1860 Munich staff

Former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has denied claims by 1860 Munich that he has joined their coaching staff.

The German club announced on their website that Eriksson was to assist manager Alexander Schmidt.

However the Swede told BBC Sport he had not spoken to 1860 for six weeks, and was confused by their announcement.

"I did talk to them six weeks ago but there has been nothing since and I am not sure where this announcement has come from," the 64-year-old said.

He added there was still "a lot of things to be worked out" before he did agree to join the second division outfit.

The club's chief executive Robert Schafer had described Eriksson as "a trainer of the world" in the club's website announcement, published on Tuesday.

"We must try to use [his] wealth of experience for us," Schafer added.

In the statement, the club said it had "a written agreement" regarding Eriksson's position.

Eriksson was only appointed technical director of Thai side BEC-Tero Sasana in September.

1860 Munich have not played in the German top flight since 2003-04 and are currently sixth in the table.

As well as his stints in England, Eriksson has also coached in his native Sweden, Portugal, Italy, Mexico, Ivory Coast and Thailand.
