Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino happy with response

New Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino thanked the club's fans and players for the reception he has received since replacing Nigel Adkins.

Adkins's sacking on Friday and Pochettino's subsequent arrival at St Mary's surprised many.

But response from fans in the goalless draw with Everton, in which Southampton played well, was largely positive.

"I want to say thanks to the players and fans for the support they have given me," Pochettino said.

"The players have shown me a great reception in a complex situation and taking into account we have only had three days to prepare they have done very well."

There had been some suggestions fans would express their unhappiness at Adkins's departure by waving white handkerchiefs in Monday's game.

Adkins led Southampton to back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League and while there were chants of 'there's only one Nigel Adkins' during the game, protests against his dismissal were at a minimum.

"I have the maximum respect for the previous manager," added Pochettino, who was speaking through an interpreter.

"I have respect for the fans saying what they want to say. That is their expression of freedom, it is normal for them to sing his name after two years here and I credit his work for what he has done here.

"But now I want to focus on my tenure and my future and my goals here, but I'm happy with how the fans have greeted me and treated me. I want to focus on my work, that is what I am here to do."

Southampton were good value for their point against Everton, and could have taken all three if they had taken one of the many chances they had in the first half.

Rickie Lambert was particularly lively, with the striker hitting the post with a free kick and seeing a header cleared off the line.

While the former Bristol Rovers striker admitted it has been a difficult couple of days, he believes the players have shown they are quickly adapting to Pochettino's methods.

"It's been a hell of a few days, a lot of people are disappointed at the club but the players have to get on with the job," said Lambert.

"We are already getting to grips with the manager's ideas. He wants high pressure, a high tempo and it showed in the first half."
