Glenavon hit seven past Ballymena United at Mourneview Park in the Irish Premiership

Struggling Glenavon scored seven in a remarkable win over Ballymena United.

Skipper Brendan Shannon got through for a fifth-minute opener and Ciaran Martyn made it 2-0 after Guy Bates pounced on a mistake by Chris Rodgers.

Mark Farren scored Glenavon's third before half-time and then former Glenavon striker Gary Liggett netted an own goal from Kyle Neill's cross.

Marc Brown netted with a spectacular overhead kick, Neill headed in the sixth and Bates lobbed the last goal.

It was quite a result for a Glenavon side that had lost seven out of eight in the Premiership and had been beaten by bottom club Lisburn Distillery in their last match.

"Last week was the lowest point since I took he job," said Glenavon player-manager Gary Hamilton.

"Everyone showed great desire and you have to do that in this leaguw.

"It was night and day from the Distillery defeat.

"My target was to be clear of relegation come the split and, at the minute, we are on course to do that."
