Ebbsfleet Utd 1-1 Newport

Preston Edwards rescued a point for relegation-threatened Ebbsfleet United with a last-gasp penalty save to dent Newport County's promotion chase.

Robbie Willmott tumbled over in the area under Phil Walsh's challenge in added time, but Edwards guessed right to palm away Andy Sandell's spot-kick.

Lee Minshull had headed in Scott Donnelly's cross to put County ahead.

But Liam Enver-Marum equalised for Ebbsfleet when Newport allowed Ashley Carew's cross to skid across the area.

Ebbsfleet goalkeeper Preston Edwards told BBC Radio Kent:

"It was what we deserved. Fortunately I saved it [the penalty, we got a point against a good team and let's hope we can go on from that.

"I've saved five [penalties] out of eight now, I'm pleased with that. If I hadn't saved it they would have been celebrating three points and we would have thought what if?

"It's looking a lot better, we've got games in hand, but there are points on the board for the other teams, we have a realistic chance of staying up, lots of games around us, we need wins now and hopefully six wins, maybe seven, will keep us up."

Newport County manager Justin Edinburgh told BBC Radio Wales:

"Obviously we're disappointed with missing a penalty but probably on reflection of the game a draw was the right result.

"If you look at the bigger picture that's three away games on the spin, we've taken seven points and if you'd said beforehand would we have accepted that we probably would have.

"It was heavy out there, it was not conducive to play football on and I think a lot was taken out of us Tuesday night (in the 3-2 win at Hereford United) with the atmosphere and the emotion of the whole game."
