Premier Division: Derry City 2-1 Limerick FC

Derry City produced a stunning late turnaround to defeat Limerick 2-1 at the Brandywell and go top of the Premier Division.

Limerick will feel hugely aggrieved that Rory Patterson's 88th-minute winner was not disallowed with the striker appearing to be well offside.

Stephen Folan's first-half header put Limerick ahead.

But a Mark Griffin equaliser and Patterson's late heroics saw City turn the game on its head.

With Sligo Rovers drawing 1-1 against Shamrock Rovers in Dublin, Derry move to the top of the table ahead of last season's champions on goal difference.

Derry's next game will be Monday's contest against Sligo at the Showgrounds.

Declan Devine's side struggled to create chances of note in the first half and the visitors deservedly went ahead after 28 minutes thanks to Folan.

The excellent Shane Tracy first forced a corner from a free-kick which almost surprised Gerard Doherty, and then delivered a pinpoint corner for the defender to head in from close range.

The closest the hosts came in the first half was when Michael Rafter's fierce volley from 10 yards was kept out by Barry Murphy's stunning save.

And despite all their hard work, Limerick were pegged back five minutes from time when Griffin fired a shot into the left corner of the goal from 20 yards.

Three minutes later, Barry McNamee's shot fell to Patterson, and despite looking to be offside, he kept his composure to slot home and send the home crowd into raptures.

Sligo's draw means Derry go top for the first time this season ahead of Monday's contest at the Showgrounds.

St Patrick's Athletic are only three points off the pace while Dundalk are also in touch, two points further back.
