Barnsley confident David Flitcroft will sign new contract

Barnsley director Don Rowing believes it is a formality that David Flitcroft will sign a new contract with the club.

The 39-year-old took over on a deal until the end of the season after the departure of Keith Hill in December.

He led them to victory in nine of his 21 league games in charge and Saturday's draw with Huddersfield saw them retain their Championship status.

"He's spoken with us and hopefully it won't be too long until he puts pen to paper," he told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"It takes time to get these contracts together and there are other issues we have to address. I think a fortnight would be a realistic timeframe.

"He knows what he wants and he's already said that he wants to keep the bulk of the team together, someone who didn't want the job wouldn't do that.

"I would be very disappointed if he did not take the job."

Meanwhile, the club have announced that they are releasing defenders Rob Edwards and Stephen Foster, midfielder Matt Done and forward John Rooney, the younger brother of England star Wayne.

Foster, 32, was Barnsley's second longest-serving player, making over 240 appearances for the club and scoring 10 goals, including the first in their shock 2-1 FA Cup win at Liverpool in 2008.

The club have offered new deals to goalkeeper Luke Steele, defenders Martin Cranie, Bobby Hassell, Jim McNulty and Tom Kennedy, midfielder Tomas Cywka and striker Jason Scotland.
