Women's Euro 2013: Sweden and Germany into semi-finals
- Published
Hosts Sweden will meet holders Germany in the last four of Euro 2013 after both won their quarter-finals.
Sweden scored three goals inside the first 19 minutes in Halmstad as they easily brushed aside Iceland 4-0, with Lotta Schelin (2), Marie Hammarstrom and Josefine Oqvist on the scoresheet.
Germany, who lost to Norway in their previous fixture, narrowly defeated Italy in Vaxjo.
Simone Laudehr scored the only goal, stabbing home from a first-half corner.
Silvia Neid's Germany are hoping to win the tournament for the sixth time in succession, but their defeat in the group stage by Norway was their first at a European Championship for 20 years and they were not at their best against Italy.
Anja Mittag and Laudehr missed good chances before the latter scored after 26 minutes, her shot taking a deflection off Simone Bartoli on its way to goal.
Germany keeper Nadine Angerer saved from Daniela Stracchi, but Italy struggled to create clear openings and their opponents twice hit the woodwork - through Nadine Kessler and Dzsenifer Marozsan - as they pressed for a second.
Pia Sundhage's Sweden were far more clinical against Iceland, who sneaked into the last eight as one of the two best third-placed finishers in the group stage.
Hammarstrom put Sweden in control with a long-range left-foot strike after three minutes.
Oqvist then guided the ball beyond onrushing keeper Gudbjorg Gunnarsdottir for the second and Schelin struck at the near post to put the tie beyond Iceland with more than an hour left.
Schelin struck again after 59 minutes, poking home from close range, and Sweden will now face Germany in Wednesday's semi-final.
