Torquay United 1-1 Portsmouth

Winger Jordan Chapell scored after only 18 seconds but Torquay were unable to hold on to beat Portsmouth.

Chappell's fifth of the season - a left-foot shot across goal - was the fastest in the Devon club's history.

On-loan West Ham striker Paul McCallum should have doubled the Gulls' lead before half-time but he shot wide.

Pompey piled on the pressure and made the breakthrough with nine minutes to go as Ryan Bird poked home Jed Wallace's cross from the right.

Portsmouth manager Guy Whittingham speaks to BBC Radio Solent:

"How do you sum it up when you've totally dominated the game and come away drawing. It's disappointing from our point of view obviously because we've played really well.

(On early Torquay goal) "You can't afford not to attack balls and we didn't attack that first sort of ball booted up front by them, and paid for it because we couldn't get the ball clear and they obviously scored."

"We asked our players to be brave on the ball and play some football and we've done that well today."

(On Ryan Bird's first Football League goal) "We believed he'd come and score goals for us and he's off the mark today so he'll keep pressing for that first start, I expect. He'll now get the realism that he can score in this league and when you have that through the leagues then it gives you a lot of confidence."
