Jose Mourinho says Chelsea over 'garbage' start

Manager Jose Mourinho says Chelsea's "garbage" start to the Champions League campaign is behind them after impressively overcoming Schalke.

Chelsea, who lost at home to Basel last month, won 3-0 to go level on points with Schalke at the top of Group E.

Mourinho said afterwards he wants to qualify for the round of 16 stage as group winners.

"We are in a good position to qualify and we'll try to finish first," he added.

Chelsea suffered an opening 2-1 loss to Basel at Stamford Bridge in September.

But back-to-back wins over Steaua Bucharest and Schalke have put Chelsea in command, with two of their remaining three games at home.

"I told the players after the match against Basel we did garbage and we have to clean it," said Mourinho.

"We did it in the best possible way - two away wins and leading the group.

"Because of my experience I was not in hell after the first game and I'm not in heaven today. I'm calm."

Fernando Torres marked his 100th start for Chelsea since joining from Liverpool for £50m in January 2011 with two goals in Gelsenkirchen as the Blues eased to victory over the team who had started the day with a three-point lead at the top of the group.

Eden Hazard added Chelsea's third.

Asked about Torres's impressive display, Mourinho added: "He's a hard worker, he's not someone who hangs behind the fee Chelsea paid for him."

Torres, who now has 39 goals for Chelsea, said: "As a team we are feeling much better. The last few games I feel very sharp and well."
