Derek McInnes hails Dons after late winner at Tannadice

Derek McInnes praised his Aberdeen side following Peter Pawlett's late winner against Dundee United.

Barry Robson's penalty cancelled out John Souttar's opener before Pawlett's late strike at Tannadice.

"I thought we nullified their threat and kept them at bay," McInnes told BBC Sportsound after the 2-1 win for the side sitting third in the table.

"We created so many chances in the second half and managed the ball a lot better. But these boys never give up."

McInnes praised Dundee United goalkeeper Radoslaw Cierzniak, who produced a string of impressive saves to thwart the Dons.

"Both teams tried to play," McInnes said. "United are a brilliant young side with some talented players.

"Their keeper has pulled off three or four top saves and you start to think it's not going to be your day.

"Then to lose a goal from a set piece when they hadn't really been threatening was really disappointing.

"But the players' response was terrific and to come from behind to win it was the reward we deserved. Our players were outstanding in the second half.

"I thought, in general, that the referee handled the game well. Both sets of supporters would want to see their team playing the game in that manner.

"It was competitive and aggressive, but I don't think it every boiled over at any point.

"To lose a goal when we were in the ascendancy and looking like we were going to win was disappointing.

"But these boys never give up and never know they're going to try to win the game.

"I thought Peter Pawlett was outstanding again. Our support were magnificent and a wee added ingredient is the fact it was New Year's Day as well. Both sets of fans relished the battle."
