Hartlepool lost by three goals for the second game in a row as Rochdale continued their push for promotion.

Dale took the lead through sub George Donnelly, who struck from close range after his first shot was blocked.

A volley from skipper Peter Cavanagh followed, with Graham Cummins sealing the win from eight yards.

Pools had gone close early on when Jordan Richards' free kick hit the underside of the bar but after the break Dale took control.

Post-match: Rochdale manager Keith Hill

Rochdale manager Keith Hill told BBC Radio Manchester:

"I think everyone was expecting us to slip up and I half understand why because we (former club Barnsley) used to do a lot of statistical work on energy output when we were playing against Championship sides and it can drain you for a week.

"The first half was a massive wrestle between the two sides, but it's all about results. And the players had the hunger today.

"I've witnessed Peter Cavanagh play for Accrington, Fleetwood and obviously Rochdale. But I can't remember him performing to that standard on a game that had a lot of significance to it to the remainder of the season
