Carlisle's League One survival hopes hung by a thread as substitute James Dayton sealed a victory for Oldham.
The Latics extended their unbeaten run to eight games, and Carlisle need four points from Crawley and Wolves to have any hope of staying in League One.
In a scrappy game, midfielder Dayton settled the tie as he cleverly worked an opening to score from six yards.
Carlisle rallied in vain as Paul Rachubka denied Danny Redmond and David Symington with two brilliant saves.
Defeat at Crawley on Tuesday would consign the Cumbrians to relegation.
Oldham manager Lee Johnson told BBC Radio Manchester:
"I thought, tactically, we did well. The lads have worked very hard defensively.
"It's no fluke that we've now had five clean sheets in our last seven or eight matches.
"We have had a few hurdles to get across this year. We pretty much threw together a back four that all needed to get fit."
