Swansea's Jonjo Shelvey good enough for World Cup, says Monk

Jonjo Shelvey is good enough to go to this summer's World Cup, according to Swansea boss Garry Monk.

The 21-year-old scored a wonder goal from the centre circle and set up two others in the Swans' 4-1 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.

Monk believes Shelvey is good enough to make Roy Hodgson's England squad for Brazil.

"If it's not now it should be later if he carries on progressing the way he should be as a player," said Monk.

"People have been talking about his potential for years and you forget he's only 21."

Monk says other players in his squad like Wayne Routledge would also be deserving of an international call up.

"If they continue to work hard and play like that then I'm sure a few of them hopefully will get noticed," he said.

Swansea signed Shelvey from Liverpool for an initial fee of £5m in July 2013.

The 21-year-old has already played for England, making his debut against San Marino in October 2012.

The former Charlton Athletic player set up Swansea's opener against Villa with a superb long pass before he hit his goal-of-the-season contender.

Villa keeper Brad Guzan's poor clearance fell straight to Shelvey on the edge of the centre circle, just inside the Villa half.

The Swansea midfielder controlled the ball before volleying a dipping shot back over the American into the corner of the net.

"He came in at half-time shouting 'goal of the season'," said Monk.

"Typical Jonjo. It was brilliant.

"He does it in training. He tries it. He's got that technique and that in the locker and today you could see the intention straight away it was not a fluke.

"It's what he was trying to do and he gave the keeper no chance."

Shelvey's spectacular strike came less than four minutes after Villa had equalised.

Monk says the goal was the turning point for Swansea's victory, which leaves them eight points clear of the relegation zone in 12th.

"At that moment in the game, I thought Villa was pushing us back, something like that can change the game," said Monk, "which it did."
