Nato summit means Newport teams cannot play at home

Up to 60 world leaders are expected to attend the summit at Celtic Manor Resort in Newport

Newport County and Newport Gwent Dragons cannot play at Rodney Parade for 10 days because of the two-day Nato summit in the city.

Neither team can play at home between 27 August and 7 September due to the security operation.

The summit is held on 4-5 September at the Celtic Manor Resort.

County chief executive David Boddy said he has been told the club will play away on the first Saturday and at home on the Monday after the ban is lifted.

The Dragons will also work any fixtures they have in this period of time around the restriction.

Up to 60 world leaders, including US President Barack Obama, are expected in the city.

The Football League fixtures will be announced on Wednesday but Boddy said he doesn't expect the changes to have an effect on the team.

"It's the largest security operation ever undertaken in the UK so as a club, and the Football League, we have to fall in line with what the police requested so it's not an issue at all.

"It's not going to cause us too many problems, obviously the police have been in consultation with the Football League and the Football League have worked the fixtures around it."
