Andy Mangan: Shrewsbury Town's League Cup hero 'made up'

Shrewsbury's Andy Mangan says scoring the winner in the 1-0 League Cup win at Premier League club Leicester was the highlight of his career.

The striker left Forest Green by mutual consent to join Shrewsbury after a successful appeal against having his contract cancelled.

"I'm made up," said Mangan. "It's the best night I've had in football.

"Especially after the time I've had. I must thank the gaffer for giving me a chance to get my career forward again."

Mangan was suspended by Rovers in 2013 for disciplinary reasons and had his contract terminated in February before then having it reinstated in June.

The 27-year-old Liverpudlian moved on to Shrewsbury just seven weeks later - to become one of Town boss Micky Mellon's 16 summer signings.

And he has made a great start to his Shrewsbury career, scoring four times in their six-match unbeaten start to the season.

"We've got a good squad with a fantastic camaraderie and we fancy ourselves against anybody," Mangan told BBC Shropshire.

"I'm made up for the lads and the club. These things only happen once in a blue moon, so you have to enjoy the occasion. We fully deserved to win, we performed fantastically and actually could have had a few more.

"But, and I know it's the old cliche, it's all about the team and we can only be looking as far as ahead as Saturday."

By the time Shrewsbury host newly-promoted Luton Town on Saturday, they will know the identity of their next League Cup opponents, having made the third round for only the second time since returning to the Football League 10 years ago.

"It would be Liverpool for me," said Mangan. "That really would be a dream come true."

But first Mangan has to recover from the hamstring injury he suffered at Leicester, which immediately forced him off.

"I've slightly tweaked my hammy," revealed Mangan. "It might have been in striking the ball but I felt it as it turned to celebrate."

Shrewsbury manager Mellon paid tribute to the 1,000-plus travelling army of Town fans who made the trek across the Midlands to Leicester.

"I thank the fantastic support we had," Mellon told BBC Shropshire. "They can count themselves part of what we did. They got right behind the lads and rode us over the line.

"I'm really pleased for the whole club. These are the nights that are special and you have to savour them."
