Manager Justin Edinburgh is frustrated Newport County will have to wait over a week for their next game.

County secured their first win of the League Two season with a 1-0 victory at Portsmouth.

But the Nato summit in Newport means County do not have a game until they host Cambridge United on 8 September.

"We've unfortunately got to wait 10 days to play our next game," Edinburgh said.

"We could do without that because confidence is key and momentum and after this we've got make sure we capitalise."

Substitute Andy Sandell's late goal was enough to secure Newport's first victory, after only picking up a point from their opening four league games and losing in the Capital One Cup to Reading.

Edinburgh said the win was no more than the Exiles deserved.

"It was a complete away performance. It's good to be up and running," Edinburgh said.

"We needed that - we needed a little bit of luck to swing our way.

"I've felt since the second half at Wycombe that performances have got better and with the belief we had it was only a matter of time.

"We've shown what belief we have and I've said before, I've got the utmost respect for this group of players and it's starting to show now.

"We've got a level headed group and we know what are aims are this season."

Captain Sandell hopes the win at Portsmouth will kick-start County's League Two campaign.

"It's massive. It's a big pick me up for the lads and hopefully we can push on from here," Sandell said.

"Obviously last week we got off the mark with a point and three points and a clean sheet is what we needed."
