Swansea City captain Ashley Williams praised Bafetimbi Gomis after the French striker made his full debut in the 4-2 Premier League loss at Chelsea.

The 29-year-old joined from Lyon in June but has had to bide his time.

With first-choice striker Wilfried Bony having played for Ivory Coast midweek, Swans boss Garry Monk opted to start with Gomis at Stamford Bridge.

"He did really well and obviously it's a very difficult place to come and make your debut," Williams said.

"He's still got stuff to work on for our team as a reference point, he probably agrees he needs to hold the ball up a little bit better.

"But there were a couple of times he didn't have support and held the ball up well; he's a big, strong lad.

"It's nice now that if Bony comes back from an international the manager can make a change and we can put another player of that quality in there."

Williams is happy that Swansea appear to have two quality targetmen to call on this season.

But the centre-back says that if the situation dictates, then the Welsh side could abandon their preferred lone striker option and play both Gomis and Bony up front together.

"I'm just happy we've got quality replacements, two players in a position that are very good," Williams added.

"I know if they can get playing together it'll be a dominant force up front, but the way we play is with one striker at the minute so it's something we'll continue to work on.

"If we have to make that change then we should be able to do that."

Despite dropping points for the first time this season, Swansea remain third in the Premier League and face Southampton at the Liberty Stadium next Saturday.
