Women's World Cup: Wales seek win in Ukraine for play-off place

Captain Jess Fishlock has described Wales Women's World Cup qualifier in Ukraine as a "winner-takes-all" game.

Ukraine moved above Wales into second place - but level on points - in World Cup qualifying Group Six after an 8-0 win over Turkey on Saturday.

Wales need to win in Lviv on Wednesday and hope Finland lose to France to secure a play-off spot.

"It's a winner-takes-all scenario, if either of us want to go through to the play-offs we have to win," she said.

Fishlock has been pleased with Wales' World Cup campaign following their failure to reach the Euro 2013 play-offs.

But the Seattle Reign forward, currently on loan at FFC Frankfurt during the National Women's Soccer League off-season, believes a sign of progress will be securing a play-off spot.

"This campaign we've continued to move forward off our Euro campaign and continued to prove we are a good side that is improving and is developing," Fishlock said.

"It will be nice for us to get that step further than the Euros to show that exactly.

"Because otherwise you could possibly say that we're still at that same point and we haven't tipped over that edge."

Fishlock says Wales cannot dwell on August's heavy home defeat against England, who secured their place at next year's finals with a resounding 4-0 win in Cardiff.

"We've got to forget about it and focus on Ukraine," said the former Cardiff City Ladies and Bristol Academy player.

"That one bad game doesn't mean we're a bad team. It hasn't hindered our campaign.

"It was one of those games where we just didn't play well and we didn't perform to the levels we expect and demand from each other.

"It was unfortunate that it happened at that point, but if there was a seed in the group that you are ok for that to happen with it's the top seed.

"That's not a game that we're supposed to get points from and we're just focusing on the games we can win and we get points from and that can get us into the play-offs."
