Steve Davis: Crewe manager 'has board's support' after poor start

Steve Davis's Crewe have won just two of their last 14 home matches

Crewe manager Steve Davis insists he still has boardroom backing, despite his side's poor start in League One.

The Alex are bottom with seven defeats from nine matches and have conceded 24 goals - the worst defensive record in England's top four divisions.

"They're all gutted because we want to be doing better than we are," the 49-year-old told BBC Radio Stoke.

"But they're all very supportive and I've had that from the very minute I walked through the door."

Davis took over in November 2011 after Dario Gradi ended his third spell in charge.

He delivered promotion back to League One via the play-offs in his first season and guided the club back to Wembley less than a year later as they won the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

But, after a mid-table finish in 2012-13, Crewe struggled last season and only stayed up on the final day of the campaign.

This time around, they sit three points adrift at the bottom after losing 3-0 at home to Colchester on Saturday, and Davis is comforted that he has a patient and level-headed Crewe chairman John Bowler and his board right behind him.

"John and all the board are always fantastic people to talk to," added Davis. "When things have gone well, everything's rosy, and when things haven't gone so well, they've always got an opinion.

"I've always got open ears to their opinions. I've always had John's support and I'm sure, in the future, they will continue to be supportive to me."
