Adam Cunnington scored for Cambridge after being recalled from a loan spell at Bristol Rovers

Ryan Bird struck late on as Cambridge United came from a goal down to beat Northampton Town in League Two.

Marc Richards put an early header wide for the visitors, before Robbie Simpson was denied by a Jordan Archer save.

Ivan Toney headed the Cobblers in front from Chris Hackett's cross, only for Adam Cunnington to nod in Liam Hughes's corner moments later.

Ex-Northampton keeper Chris Dunn denied Gregor Robertson before Bird swept in Kwesi Appiah's cross for the winner.

Cambridge had to survive a goalmouth scramble at the death, but the win, which moves Richard Money's side up to eighth, was their first home league victory over the Cobblers for 42 years and it came in front of a bumper crowd of 5,644 at the Abbey Stadium.

Chris Wilder's Northampton had started the night level on points with the hosts but have now won just one of their last eight games and remain 15th, with the rest of the division still to play this weekend.
