Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro's late winner saw Shrewsbury beat Burton and leapfrog them into third in League Two.

Shrewsbury had the better of a tight first half and Josh Passley, making his debut on loan from Fulham, set up James Collins but he missed the target.

Burton had few chances until home keeper Jayson Leutwiler held on to a deflected shot from Alex MacDonald.

The deadlock was broken in the 83rd minute when Collins teed up Akpa Akpro, who rifled in from from eight yards.

The victory makes it 12 wins from 14 home games in all competitions for Shrewsbury, while it was a first defeat for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink as Burton manager.

Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon told BBC Radio Shropshire:

"We knew it was going to be very difficult. Burton are a well-organised side and it was always going to be the case of staying patient and not getting frustrated as we went looking for that way in and the chance to get the goal.

"It was a tight game. I don't remember them having a chance. All the pressure was applied by us, but we keep on going, we are very fit and have great togetherness.

"We deserved our victory and pressed very well. We have worked on that since Monday - and so I am delighted that we are taking the training ground positives onto the pitch.

"The clean sheet is huge but we don't look back on what could have been after the defeat last weekend - we move on and tackle the problem with the fight and spirit of the standards we expect at this club."

Burton manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink told BBC Radio Derby:

"They had more of the ball. We knew that they are a good side, especially at home.

"I must say the chances they got, or the shots they got at our goal were outside the area, so organisation wise we were alright.

"The boys put a big effort in. I must say we were unlucky with a few breaks but it was a deserved win for Shrewsbury."
