Irish Premiership: Glenavon 1-1 Institute

A late Gary Hamilton goal rescued a point for Glenavon in Friday night's Premiership clash at home to Institute.

The player-manager snapped up an 85th minute rebound after Ciaran Caldwell's shot had come off the post.

Institute had taken the lead in the 55th minute when in-demand striker Stephen O'Flynn curled in a fine free-kick from about 20 yards.

Glenavon's James Singleton was sent-off on 81 minutes for bringing down Paul McVeigh who was running in on goal.

The Lurgan Blues will be disappointed not to have improved on their poor home record, but they at least avoided a sixth league defeat at Mourneview Park this season.

Glenavon, league leaders in early September, stay in fifth place in the Premiership table with Institute remaining in 10th.

In a dull first half, Kevin Braniff headed just over from a Caldwell cross and Singleton fired a half-volley just wide.

The opening goal came from a free-kick awarded for a Singleton foul on O'Flynn.

The big striker, reported to be a target for Linfield, sent a cracking free-kick past keeper Alan Blayney to give Institute hope of only a third away league win this term.

Glenavon went close when Singleton flashed a shot across the face of goal and a fourth Premiership defeat in a row seemed to be staring them in the face when the same player was sent-off with nine minutes left on the clock.

But Hamilton, who had just come on as a substitute, reacted well to score from close-range after Caldwell's shot was touched onto the upright by keeper Martin Gallagher.
