Swansea: Gylfi Sigurdsson may have higher ambitions - Monk

Swansea boss Garry Monk admits midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson could have ambitions of playing for a bigger club, but says his focus is with the Swans.

Sigurdsson, 25, faces former club Tottenham on Sunday and Monk believes he came back from White Hart Lane this summer as "a better player".

The Iceland international signed a four-year deal in July.

"You want the players to have dreams of playing bigger, better clubs, Champions League football," said Monk.

"If you don't have that dream, there's nothing to aim for.

"As players they want to play the best, and those are the type of players you want at your club.

"They're at a great club right now, enjoying their football and there's no rush for them. They're not thinking they've got to go. Their sole ambition right now and their biggest focus is on Swansea City."

Sigurdsson left Spurs for the Welsh club after only playing 26 Premier League matches during a two-year spell at White Hart Lane.

But he has said he has no extra motivation for Sunday's game and Monk does not think the midfielder holds any grudges.

"He had a fantastic time there and he really loved the club. He wanted to play more than he did, but he came back a better player.

"Of course there will be a motivation to prove people wrong, because that's always the way if you get let go from a club, and hopefully we'll see that from Gylfi at the weekend."

Sigurdsson has scored three goals so far this season and has helped the Swans to eighth place in the Premier League table.

"What you're seeing in the games, that's why I wanted him," said Monk, who has no fresh injury concerns for Sunday's game.

"He still has to work on his game to get even better, but his contribution has been fantastic."

Swansea have lost only one league game at the Liberty Stadium this season and are currently one point above 10th-placed Spurs.
