Swansea defended tremendously - Monk

Swansea City manager Garry Monk praised his players' mentality after they beat Aston Villa to record back-to-back wins for only the second time this season.

The Swans' gritty 1-0 victory on Friday followed a win by the same score over Hull the previous weekend.

Monk admits his side have not been at their best, but has been pleased with their character.

"We're going to push for the performance levels but it's also the mentality you need," he said.

"At this period, with so many games in such a short space, it's about getting results.

"It was difficult conditions. I haven't seen the pitch that soft in all my time here, but I thought we adapted very well."

Before beating Aston Villa and Hull, Swansea had not won two successive Premier League matches since August when they defeated Manchester United and Burnley.

With the busy festive fixture list in mind, Monk made seven changes to his side for the match against Hull before making another four against Villa.

The former Swansea captain insists he does not have a first-choice starting line-up, as he is more concerned with building a squad of players capable of competing as they have done in the last two matches.

"It's never about 11 players, never. Those 11 players change regularly," added Monk.

"Yes you go for settled partnerships throughout the team but you also have a squad now. That's the way it is now with the games, the intensity of the games.

"I look at the squad and the quality of the squad, and that's what I'm always looking to improve.

"We're not quite there yet but I think we're at a very good level. The quality of the squad is very competitive."
