Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has overseen three wins from the last four games - to climb clear of trouble

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis is keen to tie up deals for a new reserve keeper and goalkeeping coach.

Scott Shearer's new-year exit to join Burton Albion on loan last week has left Davis light in both areas.

But Davis hopes to bring in much-travelled Fred Barber, 51, as the club's new goalkeeping coach.

And, having gone into Saturday's 3-1 win over Gillingham without a back-up keeper, Davis wants cover for the Alex's first choice Ben Garratt.

Former Shrewsbury reserve keeper Joe Anyon is currently training at Crewe after a similar trial period at Mansfield.

"We have options," Davis told BBC Radio Stoke. "And we're going to try and do something with Fred until the end of the season.

"Obviously, it's got to be within budget, but he's got exceptional experience and he'll help Ben until the end of the season until we know what's happening with Scott Shearer.

"We want him to work with Ben and the young goalkeepers. He's keen and enthusiastic around the place and if we could have him with us until the end of the season then that would be fantastic."

Barber, who amassed over 400 league appearances during his career, chiefly with Darlington, Walsall and Peterborough United, has previously worked as goalkeeping coach with Bolton Wanderers, West Bromwich Albion and Northern Ireland's national team, under Nigel Worthington.

Davis also admits that Crewe are keen to extend striker Uche Ikpeazu's loan from Championship side Watford.

"We hope to hear something back this week," added Davis.

"He's a likable lad, the lads love him and he's eager to learn. He has his tantrums and fits but, if he keep scoring goals, we'll put up with it."
