Aston Villa: Scott Marshall leaves first-team coaching role

Aston Villa first-team coach Scott Marshall has left the club.

Former Brentford and Arsenal full-back Marshall, 41, took charge of Villa's 2-1 victory over Leicester in Sunday's FA Cup fifth round game after Paul Lambert was sacked.

Ex-Spurs boss Tim Sherwood has taken over as manager on a three-year deal.

Villa chief executive Tom Fox thanked Marshall for his efforts "especially under difficult circumstances at the weekend".

Marshall worked with Lambert at Norwich before moving to Villa in 2013 and, while caretaker, was being assisted by goalkeeping coach Andy Marshall and under-21 boss Gordon Cowans.

Lambert was dismissed last Wednesday after the West Midlands club lost 2-0 to fellow strugglers Hull City and slipped into the Premier League relegation zone.

It was their 10th league game without a win, with a tally of 12 league goals from 25 games the lowest in Premier League history.

Marshall was in temporary charge for the Leicester game but revealed Sherwood delivered the half-time team talk, with the score at 0-0.

Goals from Leandro Bacuna and Scott Sinclair then secured a 2-1 win.

"The boys took his points on board and delivered it in the second half," said Marshall.

"I think he will have seen the spirit in the dressing room, and hopefully that will continue into the league over the next few weeks."
