Craig Braham-Barrett has declined the chance to make his debut for Montserrat to help Cheltenham battle against relegation from League Two.
He is eligible to play for the Caribbean island through his late grandmother and was called up for World Cup qualifiers against Curacao.
Braham-Barrett, 26, would have missed the Robins' home game against Plymouth Argyle on 28 March.
The London-born left-back is also eligible to play for Jamaica.
"I am proud to even be considered, but now is not the right time," Braham-Barrett told the club website., external
"I'd love to go to the Caribbean and play international football, and have thanked them for their invitation, but I want to keep playing for Cheltenham and not lose my place in the side."
The Gloucestershire club are 22nd in League Two, only one point above the relegation zone.
Montserrat are currently 172nd in the Fifa world rankings.
