Tom Ince: Gareth Southgate reveals winger's Under-21s snub
- Published
Gareth Southgate has expressed surprise at Tom Ince's decision to rule himself out of future England Under-21 squads.
The Hull winger, on loan at Derby, was a regular in the Under-21s' successful European Championship qualifying campaign but will now not be part of the squad for this summer's tournament.
"He feels at this moment in time he has got some priorities at club level," said Under-21 boss Southgate.
"There is some uncertainty about where he is going to be next season."
Southgate revealed the 23-year-old's snub at a news conference to announce his squad for friendlies against Czech Republic and Germany later this month.
"I have had discussions with Tom and his dad over the last week or so and he has decided he does not want to be considered for the Under-21s," Southgate said.
"I have to say I was surprised."
Better news for Southgate is the inclusion of Calum Chambers and Saido Berahino after they were left out of Roy Hodgson's senior squad.
Former England Under-19 captain Chambers, 20, has never been capped at Under-21 level.
Everton defender John Stones also returns, while Southampton left-back Matt Targett gets a first call-up.
Southgate's squad travel to Prague on 27 March before playing Germany in Middlesbrough on 30 March.
The Under-21s will return to Czech Republic in the summer for the European Championship.
