Hosts Canada beat Switzerland in front of a record crowd of 53,885 to reach the Women's World Cup quarter-finals.

Josee Belanger's goal secured a place in the last eight, where they will face either England or Norway, who meet on Monday (21:00 BST).

The winner came in the 52nd minute when Christine Sinclair laid the ball off to Belanger, whose left-footed shot went past Swiss keeper Gaelle Thalmann.

It brought to an end Switzerland's first Women's World Cup campaign.

Ana Maria Crnogorcevic had the chance to level for the Swiss but headed over the bar, while Canada keeper Erin McLeod pulled off a great close-range save to stop Vanessa Bernauer's effort.

The match in Vancouver set a new record for the largest crowd to ever watch a national team in any sport in Canada.

"To feel the energy of the crowd being so loud and proud, and to know everyone at home must have seen it, it's a moment I will never forget," said goalscorer Belanger.

"It's been a hard year. I've been trying to get those goals and everyone was saying 'it's going to come'. It arrived at the right time. It was amazing."

Switzerland defender Daniela Schwarz confirmed after the game that she would be retiring from international football, but hoped their World Cup debut would inspire more females in her home country.

The 29-year-old told BBC Sport: "Now we hope we get a boom back at home. There's not many football players back at home so we hope to get more numbers.

"There's plenty of players in the squad who have many years ahead of them so we hope to be part of the World Cup again in four years."
