Shrewsbury Town have signed Crewe captain Matt Tootle on a two-year deal.

The 24-year-old Liverpudlian, whose contract was about to expire at Gresty Road, has made the short move to Shropshire on a free transfer.

Right-back Tootle, who can also play in midfield, becomes promoted Town's sixth summer signing, following the arrival of Mat Sadler, Martin Woods, Abu Ogogo, Shaun Whalley and Darren McKnight.

"It was an easy decision when I found Shrewsbury were interested," he said.

Ins and outs at the Meadow

Ins: Mat Sadler (Rotherham United), Martin Woods (Ross County), Abu Ogogo (Dagenham & Redbridge), Shaun Whalley (Luton Town), Darren McKnight (Barnsley), Matt Tootle (Crewe)

Outs: Ashley Vincent (contract cancelled), Aaron Wildig (Morecambe), Bobby Grant (loan expired), Keith Southern (loan expired), Josh Passley (loan expired), Andy Robinson (retired)

Tootle, one of Crewe's academy products, has long been the subject of transfer speculation at Gresty Road.

He was tipped last summer to become another big-money sale for the Alex, to follow in the footsteps of Nick Powell (Manchester United),Ashley Westwood (Aston Villa) and Luke Murphy (Leeds United), who were all team-mates when they won promotion from League Two at Wembley in 2012.

But he was sidelined by a succession of injuries from mid-October onwards last season.

Tootle made 224 appearances for Crewe, scoring three times, following his debut in November 2009.
