St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright is content with his squad as the club began its pre-season training ahead of their Europa League campaign.

Five first-team players were released at the end of what Wright described as "a magnificent season" for the club.

But Saints this week added striker John Sutton from Motherwell, their fourth summer signing, and veteran defender Frazer Wright agreed a new deal.

"I am happy enough with the squad," Wright told BBC Scotland.

With Brian Graham choosing to sign for Ross County at the end of his loan from Dundee United, and the release of veteran former Scotland forward James McFadden, Saints were seeking a fresh goalscoring threat.

And Wright believes he has found it in 31-year-old Sutton, who scored 13 goals last season for St Johnstone's Scottish Premiership rivals.

"He's got a good goalscoring record, he's got a presence and a great attitude, very professional," he said.

"I am looking for John, over the next two seasons, to score regularly for us."

St Johnstone have struggled to compensate up front for the loss of Stevie May, who was sold to Sheffield Wednesday last year.

"We have a very good defensive record and you saw what happened when we had Stevie May," said Wright, who revealed he had previously attempted to bring Sutton to McDiarmid Park.

"If we can add 10 or 12 goals more to what we had last season, it would help us have a very good season."

St Johnstone were the first Premiership club to begin pre-season training.

"I'm delighted to be back early because it means we're involved in Europe and deservedly so," said Wright.

"We have experienced it the last two seasons but we know how to handle it.

"It is a great experience for managers, coaches, players and particularly the fans."

Wright is hoping that Monday's draw will produce an away tie with easy travel access for those supporters.

"We've been unbeaten away from home in the last two seasons," he added.

"We've won against what looked like the bigger teams in the first round then faltered against lesser known teams.

"We are looking to improve on that and go into it in a positive manner."

Meanwhile, forward Michael O'Halloran has signed a two-year contract extension with St Johnstone, with the 24-year-old having joined from Bolton Wanderers in January 2014.

The Scot scored 10 goals in his first full season with Saints.
