Tony Roberts: Goalkeeper coach joins Swansea from Arsenal

Tony Roberts has joined Swansea City as first-team goalkeeping coach.

The former Wales international has been coaching at Arsenal since the 2008-9 season and has worked with current Swans number one Lukasz Fabianski during their time at the Emirates.

Roberts, 45, replaces Javier Garcia who has returned to Spain for personal reasons after 12 months at Swansea.

"I've got no doubt that his talents will strengthen the club's backroom staff," Swans manager Garry Monk said.

"We are disappointed to lose Javi because he has done a great job over the last year and we thank him for all his hard work and dedication.

"But we are delighted to be able to replace him with someone of Tony's calibre and experience. He comes with an excellent reputation as a forward-thinking, modern and knowledgeable goalkeeping coach."

During his playing career, Roberts played for Queens Park Rangers, Millwall and Dagenham & Redbridge.

Roberts also won two caps for Wales and is the only goalkeeper to have scored in an FA Cup tie when he netted for Dagenham & Redbridge against Basingstoke Town in October 2001.

He is the second new coach to join the Premier League club this week, after James Beattie was added as a forwards coach at Liberty Stadium.
