Southend United: David Mooney signs as Michael Timlin stays

David Mooney is Southend's first signing of the summer

Southend have signed ex-Leyton Orient striker David Mooney on a two-year contract, and midfielder Michael Timlin has agreed a new deal at Roots Hall.

Former Republic of Ireland youth international Mooney, 30, was a free agent after leaving the O's in May.

He scored 38 goals in 140 league games in his four-year spell with Orient.

Meanwhile, 30-year-old Timlin, who has made 159 appearances for the Shrimpers, has signed a new two-year deal, with the option of another 12 months.

He scored in May's League Two play-off semi-final second-leg win over Stevenage, despite needing 15 stitches after a clash of heads in the first.

His previous contract at Roots Hall had run out this summer.

"I was fortunate to have the most interest I've ever had. I was always adamant to see what the Southend situation was first," said Timlin.

"I've had a really good career at Southend and the fans have taken to me. I've worked well with the manager, Phil Brown."
