Cristian Montano: Bristol Rovers give midfielder 'second chance'

Cristian Montano also spent time at West Ham and Oxford United before joining Oldham

Bristol Rovers have signed former Oldham midfielder Cristian Montano, subject to international clearance.

Montano was sacked by the Latics in December 2013 only for the Crown Prosecution Service to drop their investigation into alleged spot-fixing.

The Colombian winger, 23, began his career at West Ham and had spells at Notts County, Swindon, Dagenham & Redbridge as well as Oxford.

"He comes with quite a lot of baggage," said Rovers boss Darrell Clarke.

"I know that he is desperate for another opportunity to play league football and I'm a firm believer in giving everyone a second chance."

Montano was one of 13 footballers arrested on suspicion of spot-fixing by the National Crime Agency in November 2013. He "vehemently denied" any involvement.

The Sun on Sunday newspaper alleged Montano had tried to get booked in exchange for money during a clash with Wolves at Molineux.

But he was never charged and the case against all 13 players was eventually dropped.

"I agree with Darrell in that everyone deserves a second chance and I would like to welcome Cristian to Bristol Rovers and hope that he enjoys a successful career with us," added chairman Nick Higgs.
