Blackburn Rovers 1-2 Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury Town beat Championship opposition in Blackburn Rovers to reach the League Cup second round.

James Collins burst through the Blackburn defence with nine minutes played to give the League One side the lead.

Blackburn levelled when debutant Ryan Nyambe's cross was deflected into his own net by Liam Lawrence.

But Tyrone Barnett volleyed home just two minutes later and Shrewsbury held on for a place in the next round.

Blackburn manager Gary Bowyer:

"We gave players an opportunity and as a manager there are times that all you can do is provide them with an opportunity to stake a claim for a place in the team.

"Some have made it interesting for Saturday and some have made it easier."

Shrewsbury manager Micky Mellon:

"We encourage them to be brave and go and play.

"We don't have a go if they give the ball away because we're saying: 'Go and play, go and express yourself.' There's always an objective we're trying to achieve. But we want them to be brave and play."
