Brentford intend to re-lay 'disastrous' Griffin Park pitch

Brentford intend to re-lay the pitch at Griffin Park after it was criticised following Saturday's draw with Ipswich.

Head coach Marinus Dijkhuizen described the surface, which underwent drainage works this summer, as "a disaster, awful and unbelievable".

"Searching questions have been asked of all those involved in the pitch construction process," Bees chief executive Mark Devlin said.

"It is an entirely unsatisfactory position to be in."

Devlin said a the instillation of a new under-soil drainage system had been required as several home games came close to being postponed last season following heavy rainfall prior to matches.

However, despite "significant investment" on the works, Devlin says the club are "hugely disappointed" with the new surface.

Devlin says Brentford are looking form a solution to the problems with the pitch "as quickly as possible"

"Far more damage was caused than we could have expected," he told the club website.

"Our pitch maintenance contractors, who have, incidentally, been responsible for the decent surfaces of the past couple of seasons, worked tirelessly on the surface ahead of the Ipswich game.

"Unfortunately there remain unstable areas of the pitch and I have asked for a complete a re-lay as soon as it can be worked on. The players and fans deserve better.

"All our efforts are focused on the solution and doing it as quickly as possible."
