Coventry City: Cup defeat will not deflate confidence - Mowbray

Mowbray has won six of his 16 games in charge of Coventry since taking over in March 2015

Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray says their early season confidence has not been hit by their League Cup exit.

After winning their opening league game of the season, the Sky Blues went out of the cup on Tuesday night to fellow League One side Rochdale on penalties.

"It's disappointing we're out of the cup but we didn't lose a match, we lost a penalty shoot-out," said Mowbray.

"We're unbeaten in two games and hopefully we'll come back stronger when we return to the league."

After beating Wigan Athletic 2-0 to get their League One campaign off to the perfect start, Coventry lost 5-3 on spot-kicks at Spotland after a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.

But Mowbray is sure his squad will take the positives out of both performances.

"The players will take stock and realise they're still unbeaten - they beat one of the teams fancied to win the league this year and going to Rochdale is always very tough," he added to BBC Coventry and Warwickshire.

After handing a debut to 21-year-old goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook at Spotland, Mowbray was pleased with the way he coped with the occasion.

"He did well," said the Sky Blues manager. "I didn't give him a debut for any other reason than he's been fantastic in pre-season. He deserved to play. I'm really pleased with him."
