Jonjo Shelvey hopes to persuade Roy Hodgson he is worthy of an England recall

Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey hopes his club form can lead to an England recall.

The 23-year-old won his only cap in a 5-0 World Cup qualifying win over San Marino in October 2012.

England face the same opponents away in a Euro 2016 qualifier on 5 September.

Shelvey, who has impressed in Swans' unbeaten Premier League start, said: "That's everyone's dream to play for their country - and it's obviously my dream as well."

The former Liverpool player was influential in their 2-0 win over 10-man Newcastle on Saturday, and his manager Garry Monk believes he has become a more consistent performer.

"Consistency is a good word - it's important," said Monk. "He's a young player but, at this level, you need to be consistent.

"He showed that towards the end of last season and he's showing it again.

"It's important he continues to work even harder, but he listens and wants to do it. Hopefully he gets even better."

Shelvey - then at Anfield - came off the bench for Michael Carrick against San Marino at Wembley three years ago.

He joined Swans in July, 2013 and helped them to a highest Premier League finish of eighth in 2014-15 with a strong finish to that season.

In the off-season, Shelvey employed a chef to help him maintain a healthy weight.

"I feel a lot better in myself.

"It's just a matter of keeping on top of it now and maintaining it, listening to the manager here, improving every day and fighting for my place."

In the wake of Saturday's win over Newcastle at Liberty Stadium, Shelvey said: "Hopefully I can keep on putting in performances like that for [England manager] Roy Hodgson to let me in to his squad."

Shelvey says his side were "worthy winners" against Steve McClaren's men and were on top even before Newcastle's Daryl Janmaat was dismissed in the 41st minute.

Winger Jefferson Montero also impressed as Bafetimbi Gomis and Andre Ayew scored the goals.

"We knew he had it in his locker," said Shelvey of Montero.

"He had a couple of games last season - one of them against Arsenal when he was outstanding, he tore their right-back to pieces - and he's done that both games so far.

"And we just hope it can continue for us because we just get the ball to him and he does his bit."
