League Two side Northampton Town have signed defender Adam Yates on a one-month loan from Port Vale.

The 32-year-old right-back will provide cover for the suspended Josh Lelan and injured Brendan Moloney, and could make his debut in Tuesday's League Cup second-round match at Newcastle.

Yates is Vale's longest-serving player, having made 234 appearances since joining in 2009.

But he said he was "not pleased" to lose the number two shirt this term.

Vale manager Rob Page decided instead to give the shirt number to fellow right-back Ben Purkiss, who arrived on a free transfer after leaving Walsall in the summer.

Meanwhile, another Vale defender has gone out on loan, Lewis Bergin having signed for non-league neighbours Kidsgrove Athletic on a month-long deal.
