European football: Tempers flare as Valbuena returns to Marseille
- Published
It has been another eventful weekend across Europe, with Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan all maintaining 100% winning starts to their respective league campaigns.
Inter made it four wins from four in Serie A courtesy of a 1-0 win over Chievo, Barca beat Levante 4-1 at the Nou Camp to top La Liga and Dortmund won 3-0 against Bayer Leverkusen to make it five victories on the bounce.
In addition, Lucien Favre resigned as head coach of Borussia Monchengladbach after they failed to collect a single point from their first five Bundesliga matches.
But what are the stories you might have missed? Mathieu Valbuena was at the centre of ugly scenes at Marseille, an Italian legend scored his 300th competitive goal, and CSKA Moscow came back to win a 10-goal thriller - BBC Sport takes a look.
Valbuena feels Marseille fans' wrath
Mathieu Valbuena was the centre of attention as Marseille took on Lyon at the Stade Velodrome.
The midfielder, who joined Lyon this summer, was making his first appearance back at Marseille after ending his eight-year stint with the club in 2014 by joining Dynamo Moscow for what some fans felt were financial reasons.
The home fans were ready for him, 'hanging' an effigy of the player and unveiling a banner which said "True Marseillais only play for OM, you are nothing but a traitor".
The hostility extended onto the pitch, with Romain Alessandrini shown a red card for a terrible late tackle on Valbuena after Alexandre Lacazette had given the away side the lead from the penalty spot.
The game was then suspended for 20 minutes as a result of missiles being thrown at Valbuena from the stands before the players returned for the remaining 25 minutes, during which Karim Rekik, once of Manchester City, scored to earn the home side a point.
Porto win full-blooded Classico
There were also ugly scenes at the Dragao Stadium during a Portuguese Classico littered with lunging challenges, yellow cards and flare-ups.
Andre Andre's dramatic 86th-minute goal won the game for Porto but this came after eight players were booked - four from each side.
In addition, Porto defender Maicon aimed a wild karate kick at Jonas at the end of the first half and, although there was no contact, it led to a skirmish involving a dozen players.
Porto's win leaves them top of the table with 13 points, four points clear of Benfica.
Totti reaches 300
Roma legend Francesco Totti scored his 300th competitive goal for the club on Sunday as they drew 2-2 with Sassuolo at the Stadio Olimpico.
Totti, who is a few days short of his 39th birthday and playing in his 24th season, scored his side's first equaliser from close range following an error from keeper Andrea Consigli, cancelling out Gregoire Defrel's opener.
Totti's goal comes almost exactly 21 years after he hit the target for the first time - against Foggia in September 1994.
He has now scored 244 goals in Serie A, with 17 in the Coppa Italia, 38 in European competition and one in the Italian Supercup and is 31 goals short of Silvio Piola's Italian top-flight record tally of 275.
"I don't know if Totti or the Pope are more important in Rome, but I can certainly say that for Francesco the Roma shirt is like a second skin," said Roma coach Rudi Garcia, whose side had to come back for a second time on Sunday through Mohammed Salah, after Matteo Politano had restored Sassuolo's lead.
"He's an extraordinary player, on and off the field. Three hundred is an incredible number."
Ten goals, two reds and one almighty comeback
CSKA Moscow maintained their unbeaten start to the season to remain top of the Russian Premier League but that tells only half the story of their remarkable trip to Mordovia Saransk.
It could not have started worse for last season's runners-up, who went behind in the first minute to an Evgeni Lutsenko goal, lost Mario Figueira Fernandes to a red card in the 12th minute and were 3-0 down after 15 thanks to Vladimir Rykov and Rustem Mukhametshin.
Kirill Panchenko pulled one back in the 50th minute before Yannick Djalo's dismissal soon after changed the dynamic of the game.
Two goals in as many minutes before the hour from Zoran Tosic, formerly of Manchester United, and Seydou Doumbia levelled the scores but Lutsenko's second put Mordovia ahead again.
However, CSKA would have the final say in the last 10 minutes as two goals from Ahmed Musa gave them the lead for the first time and Doumbia's second made it 6-4.
Frosinone still to get off the mark
Serie A rookies Frosinone are still yet to claim their first ever Italian top-flight point after they went down 1-0 at fellow promoted side Bologna on Sunday.
A first-half goal from French forward Anthony Mounier proved decisive, to give the home side their first win of the campaign and leave Canarini bottom of the table as the only side without a point to their name.
New York lawyer Joe Tacopina attended the match to bid Bologna fans goodbye, having announced earlier that he was resigning as the club's president after 11 months in charge because of a rift with Canadian investor Joey Saputo.
Morata's mystery injury
Juventus striker Alvaro Morata is set to undergo tests after he was forced off early during the champions' first win of the season away to Genoa.
The Spain international was replaced by Roberto Pereyra midway through the first half of the 2-0 victory after suffering a "strange abdominal pain", according to Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.
Juve's win comes five days after their 2-1 Champions League victory at Manchester City and lifts them up to 12th in the Serie A table, eight points behind leaders Inter Milan.
