Euro 2016: Wales among lowest seeds for finals group draw

Wales were in the mood to celebrate after qualifying for a major finals for the first time since 1958

Wales are likely to face a tough draw for the Euro 2016 finals as they will be one of the lowest-seeded teams.

Northern Ireland, Albania and Iceland, plus two other teams to be decided by the play-offs are also in Pot 4 and cannot be drawn with Wales.

Hosts France, holders Spain, Germany, Portugal, Belgium and England are top seeds and Wales will definitely face one of them in their group.

The formula used for pot seedings includes past records in tournaments.

That has counted against Wales despite their current all-time high Fifa world ranking of eighth - above both England and France.

As well as facing one of the top seeds when the draw is made on 12 December in Paris, there are potentially some difficult opponents for Chris Coleman's side in Pot 2.

Wales will likely have to face one of Italy, Russia, Switzerland, Austria and Croatia, although there is one more Pot 2 team to be decided.

But Wales assistant coach Osian Roberts says they are not concerned by being handed a potentially more difficult draw.

"Not at all, we're just delighted to be in any pot to be honest," he said.

"The aim was to get to France, that's all we could control and we achieved that.

"We couldn't control which pot we'd be in, so we'll look at that when the draw comes out.

"Certainly we'll look forward to being part of the tournament, but not only going there to be a part of it but to make an impact."

The finals in France will have six groups of four teams, with the top two from each group plus the four best third-placed sides advancing to the round of 16 knock-out phase.

Wales have reached their first major finals since the 1958 World Cup thanks to a fine Euro 2016 qualifying campaign that saw them lose just one match and take four points off Belgium.

Despite a 2-0 loss in Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday, Wales' place at Euro 2016 was confirmed that night when Cyprus beat Israel.

Wales rounded off their campaign on Tuesday with a 2-0 win against Andorra in Cardiff, although that could not prevent Belgium pipping them to top spot in qualifying Group B.
