Port Vale goalkeeper Jak Alnwick has signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract with the League One club.

Alnwick, 22, signed initially on a short-term contract following an eve-of-season ankle injury suffered by Chris Neal, Vale's first-choice goalkeeper for the past three seasons.

The ex-Newcastle keeper has extended his stay until the summer of 2018.

He has so far conceded just 15 goals in 16 appearances for Rob Page's side, who stand 11th in League One.

Alnwick brothers to face each other

Jak Alnwick, who is now contracted to Port Vale to the summer of 2018, is in line to face his elder brother Ben, Peterborough United's goalkeeper, when Vale host Posh on Saturday.

Ex-England youth international Alnwick made all of his eight appearances for the Magpies last season, including six in the Premier League.

He made his debut as a half-time substitute in place of the injured Rob Elliot in a 2-1 win against eventual champions Chelsea in December 2014.

Alnwick, who also had eight appearances on loan with Gateshead during the 2011-12 campaign, then went out on loan to League One side Bradford City towards the end of last season.
